A woman with long light brown and gray hair, smiles warmly in an editorial-style pose, chin resting on her hand, seated in a black mesh office chair. She wears a black sleeveless top and a beaded bracelet, with a black Omron blood pressure cuff wrapped around her upper arm like a fashion accessory. The softly blurred home office background shows houseplants, a wooden door, framed art, and a window with natural light. BP Cuff is the Must Have Summer Accessory

August 18, 20262 min read

The joke is funny because it’s true.

A few months ago, I had dangerous blood pressure spike. My doctor put me on a beta blocker and instructed me to get a blood pressure cuff and message him with my readings every day until my BP comes back down to normal, which took less than a week.

A friend said, “BP cuff is the must have summer accessory we all need this season.”

LOL!

Since then, I found out many of my friends are on beta blockers and one had a dangerous BP spike the same week I did!

We’re all overloaded right now. Not just leaders, but everyone.

Leaders have the added responsibility of guiding our teams through these difficult times while also having the extra burden of being the still North Star around which everyone else revolves. This is something that I, myself, advocate.

But there’s a difference between performing okay-ness and achieving North Star-ness.

🔴 Okay-ness is masking.
🟢 North Star-ness is leadership.

🔴 Masking doesn’t hide anything anyway. People can sense the incongruity through micro-expressions on your face.

🟢North Star-ness is down-regulating your nervous system. People can sense your inner calmness. And because humans have evolved to co-regulate, a calm leader can literally reset everyone’s nervous systems.

This is a skill you can train. When I owned my restaurant, I gamified it by challenging myself to be the calmest person in the room. When I saw someone who was calmer than I was, I tried to out-calm them. It worked!

The past year has been difficult on my health, causing my nervous system to become dysregulated leading to the blood pressure spike a few months ago. The beta blocker my doctor put me on allowed all of my self-care to start working again—things like meditation, martial arts, and healthy eating.

If you need help, don’t be reluctant to seek it.
