A smiling woman with long dark hair holds a decorative blue and gold ceramic mug. She sits in a cozy, plant-filled home office. Behind her are bookshelves, plants, and a stained glass peacock lamp. Text on a black background reads: Operation "My Full-Time Job is Down-Regulating My Nervous System." Three bulleted lists follow. Mind/Body: Meditation, Qigong/Myofascial Qigong, Practicing kata/forms physically when I can and in my head when I can't, Somatic Shaking, Recumbent bike. Soundscapes: Bird song while reading and writing, Binaural beats while meditating and doing qigong, Gregorian chants while winding down at night. Aromatherapy: Simmer pot with mulling spices in my office, Scented candles in the main part of the house, Incense in my garage dojo. Down Regulating My Nervous System

May 19, 20262 min read

About a month ago my blood pressure spiked dangerously high to 195/115. This was after years of extreme stress and painful injuries and illnesses.

I was shocked. I eat clean, exercise as much as my sick and injured body allows, meditate, garden, and have pets and healthy relationships. Yet I became overwhelmed anyway.

And I'm not alone. Many of my friends and family are becoming overwhelmed despite doing everything right.

As one friend said, “Blood Pressure cuff is the must have summer accessory this season!”

My doctor prescribed a beta blocker, and my blood pressure came back down dramatically even before I took it because I had advocated for myself and I had taken an important action step in my plan. Within a few days my BP was back to healthy, and it’s been healthy ever since. Follow-up appointment later this week.

Here is Operation “My Full-Time Job is Down-Regulating My Nervous System”

Mind/Body

·Meditation

·Qigong/Myofascial Qigong

·Practicing kata/forms physically when I can, in my head when can’t

·Somatic Shaking

·Recumbent bike, normal and lateral recumbent

Soundscapes

·Bird song while reading and writing

·Binaural beats while meditating and doing qigong

·Gregorian chants while winding down at night

Aromatherapy (I have to be careful because I have an asthmatic cat)

·Simmer pot with mulling spices in my office

·Scented candles in the main part of the house

·Incense in my garage dojo, because my cat doesn't go out there.

It’s a heck of a thing to say if you’re overwhelmed you need to do more, but extraordinary times call for extraordinary self-care. Maybe start with something running in the background such as a soundscape or aromatherapy.
