8 years ago today I went keto!
My Nurse Practitioner put me on the diet because he thought it would fix whatever is wrong with my metabolism, and he was right!
I was slightly obese and pre-diabetic, despite the fact that I was eating healthy and practicing two different martial art styles.
He said, “I can’t tell you clean up your diet because you already eat healthy. I can’t tell you exercise more because you’re already exercising A LOT! So at this point, we need to pull the trigger: meds, or keto diet. And keto is better than meds.”
I went keto. Even though I owned an Italian restaurant.
But it was a fine-dining restaurant, so we had plenty of meats without breading, sauces without flour thickeners, and julienned ‘chef’s vegetables’ that were a yummy substitute for pasta.
I lost 80 pounds and kept it off for six years! Until two years I suffered a stomach/GI illness that caused me to gain about half of it back.
Now, my illness is under control, and as my MCL is healing I’m ready to lose the weight again.
When I lost the weight last time, I felt the missing 80 pounds that were no longer behind my martial art techniques, and it freaked me out!
This time, I’m going to try to keep the extra strength from being “framed up” to carry the extra weight.
I learned this from women MMA fighters—it’s called “Mom Strength.” While pregnant, they gain strength from “framing up” to carry the baby and the pregnancy weight. After giving birth, as they lose their pregnancy weight they work to maintain the extra strength.
My weight gain is not quite the same, but I’m going to try it.
It’s not “Mom Strength”, it’s “Comeback Strength” or something like that.
What kind of Comeback Strength are you building right now?
