Processing Empathy Overwhelm

August 05, 20252 min read

🧠 Recently I wrote about how the ADHD trait of empathy is exactly the leadership trait the world needs right now.
Today I’m going to talk about the flipside:
➡️ Empathy Overwhelm.

Empathy can be a superpower.
But for many ADHD leaders it can also flood the system.

You might:
• Feel everything intensely
• Notice too much at once
• Care deeply about fixing what you see

🌊 Unprocessed, that flood can lead to:
• Burnout
• Numbness
• Self-sabotage

But empathy overload isn’t a flaw.
It’s a signal.
It means you’re plugged in. Maybe too much, maybe without boundaries.

The key is processing it and returning to center
so you can lead from empathy without drowning in it.

🧩 A client of mine has been navigating this lately.
To help reduce his overwhelm he’s been reconnecting with friends, checking in on people, and going to his boxing gym.
Physical movement + social connection = relief and restoration.

I can relate.
I’m a martial artist. Physicality and community rejuvenate me.
And when the overwhelm becomes really heavy, I write about ethical leadership.
This channels my feelings into productive purpose.

💡 A few more ways to process empathy overwhelm:

🛠️ Tangible & Active:
• Movement — dance, yoga, resistance-based activity
• Creative expression — art, music, gardening
• Time in nature — wilderness, water, sky

🧭 Reflective & Integrative:
• Journaling – Try asking, “Would helping here support me or drain me?”
• Spiritual practice – Restores meaning
• Gratitude – Notice moments of integrity and kindness

🤝 Relational:
• Social connection – Sometimes it’s mere presence, sometimes it’s with boxing gloves
• Story-sharing – Talk with someone who gets it
• Meaning-making – When you want more than just comfort, you want clarity

Empathy is a leadership quality needed in the 21st century.
Don’t turn it off, process it, so you can continue leading with fierce compassion.
