International Coffee Day

This is a great opportunity for me to show off the mugs that I made myself. Making them changed my mindset.

While earning my Fine Art degree, I decided I had no talent for 3D art such as sculpture or pottery. That was fine. I thrived in 2D—photography, painting, drawing, and even paper making.

Years later I worked with developmentally disabled adults. I went back to college to take some psychology classes. I also gave ceramics another try because clay is so useful in adaptive and therapeutic art.

Making this purple leaf mug changed my life!

I pressed heuchera leaves from my own garden into a slab, formed it into a cylinder, sculpted the bottom, and added a handle. I created the relief by removing excess clay from around the leaves. It’s beautiful! But it took forever.

My instructor advised me to keep making mugs. But on the wheel because it would be faster.

I said I’d tried the wheel before and I had no talent for it.

He shrugged and said, “Try again. You’re older now, maybe you can do it this time.”

And I did!

I can throw pots!

Texture was my key. Texturing the clay with leaves or tools unlocked my creativity and kept me at the wheel until my skills caught up.

I wondered, what else can I do now that I couldn’t do before?

🌞 Fly in a hot air balloon. I had always sworn I would never fly in anything that can’t glide. But I did!

🥋 Earn my black belt. I returned to the martial arts and earned it in Okinawan Kenpo.

🍷 Become a business owner. My husband and I bought his parents’ restaurant, allowing me to put my ethical leadership theories to the test.

All it took was challenging one “I can’t.”

You can change the world when you’re more fully yourself.
