Winter is a Strategy

🥳 Happy Belated New Year! 🎉

I’ve been off social media because I’ve been busy doing pretty much nothing. Just recovering from a hectic holiday season.

A lot of people get to work on their resolutions on New Year’s Day. For me it’s always been a time of rest.

I have a client who takes that a bit further. For her, winter is a time of hibernating and information gathering. She spends the time around New Year’s figuring out her goals, but she doesn’t start working on them until the weather warms up and she naturally wants to GO!

Throughout most of human history winter has been a time when:
❄️ Mistakes were expensive
❄️ Recovery was slow
❄️ Travel was dangerous

So, people would hunker down and:
❄️ Reserve physical labor for maintenance
❄️ Focus on planning, gathering information, teaching, and storytelling
❄️ Delay irreversible decisions until conditions improved

Hitting the ground running in January seems to be a product of the modern world in which we are largely insulated from the effects of nature.

But ADHD minds are still attuned to the natural world.

Our circadian system still:

🔷 responds to sunrise
🔷 tracks day length
🔷 adjusts hormones seasonally

Our dopamine system still:

🔷 conserves when resources are scarce
🔷 avoids wasting effort under poor conditions
🔷responds to novelty that carries useful information

Modern life says:
⚠️ “Ignore that.”

ADHD brains say:
➡️ “No.”

Which is why so many ADHD leaders build lives that honor:

🔶 flexible pacing

🔶 seasonal planning

🔶 burst-and-rest cycles

🔶 incubation before execution

How do you strategize in winter?
