A smiling woman with long brown and gray hair, glasses, dangling earrings, and wearing a black blouse sits in a home office, holding a green handmade ceramic mug with a swirled texture. Behind her, softly blurred, are a laptop, a ring light, a second monitor, framed art, a purple fan on the wall, and a window with green trees visible outside. Overlaid text reads: "The best leaders can still feel like frauds sometimes. But your imposter syndrome is thousands of years out of date. It's warning you about a danger that no longer exists." Your Imposter Syndrome is Outdated

August 11, 20262 min read

The best leaders can still feel like frauds sometimes.

But your imposter syndrome is thousands of years out of date. It’s warning you about a danger that no longer exists.

Up until about 10,000 years ago, if you upset your community and they cast you out, you probably wouldn’t survive on your own.

Nowadays we have the freedom to change communities and start over.

That deathly fear you feel is real, but the danger exists far in the past.

This is important to understand because those of us with ADHD were often led to distrust our brains.

The “if you just tried harder” moments.

We did try. It’s not our fault that the task was mismatched for our neurotype. Or, more plainly, boring.

Eventually we came to believe that our brains are trying to sabotage us.

But that’s not true at all. Our brains are never trying to sabotage us.

Our brains are always trying to keep us alive, even if the information they’re giving us is wrong.

🔴 Ignoring danger signals makes them louder until we finally listen.

🟢 Acknowledging danger signals quiets them.

I like to say, “Thank you, Unconscious Mind, for trying to keep me safe. However, that fear is so totally ten thousand years ago. We’re safe now. If I make a mistake, there’s no actual risk of dying. So, you can relax now.”

That actually works!

🔴 “My brain is broken,” is disempowering.

🟢 “My brain is trying to save me, but it’s giving me wrong information for reasons,” is empowering because we can work with those reasons.

What more might you accomplish when you’re fully aligned with your mind?
