Turn Stress Into Story

September 29, 20252 min read

A year ago I helped my sensei move from Boise, Idaho to Vancouver, Washington. And my seat belt alarm was blaring the entire time…for fifteen seconds every minute over and over and over again.

I volunteered to help because I have a ton of friends in Vancouver, and one of them was running a Fight Lab that weekend.

💡 My husband had the bright idea of removing my passenger seat so I could fit more of my sensei's stuff in my car. Unfortunately, without the seat there, and with receiving latch on the seat, this caused the seatbelt alarm to go off.

😡 15 seconds of alarm. 45 seconds of peace. Repeat.

I researched how to turn off the alarm while packing his stuff my car.

By the time I realized it was hopeless, my car was packed and my husband was at work so we couldn't put the seat back in.

🎸 Solution: blast rock and roll.

Still, it was aggravating, especially when we got into town and I had to turn down the music so I could hear the GPS instructions.

😂 "This sucks, but later I'm going to have the best story!"

And that thought kept my sanity.

I posted my problem on Facebook.

🙌 A friend came through!

🚓 He's a law enforcement officer and said that this is actually a cop problem because they frequently drive without their seatbelts.

He told me to turn the key to the "on" position but don't start the car, latch and unlatch the driver's seatbelt about 20 times in 30 seconds, turn the key to "off" for a few seconds, now start the car.

This is more difficult than it sounds. After way too many attempts…

🥳 IT WORKED!

➡️ It also worked to deal with my stress by projecting myself into the future and thinking about what a great story it would make.
