The summer between high school and college,
the pizza restaurant where I’d been working for two years had an opening for a supervisor position.
I wanted it, and no one challenged me for it because everyone felt I deserved it.
When my manager told me he had made a decision,
he said he was giving the promotion to a younger, less qualified guy who didn’t even want it.
Why?
Because he felt that as a girl, I didn’t have what it takes to be an inspirational leader of the guys.
Even though they were already following my lead.
The guy he offered the promotion to said he was going to quit in protest,
but I told him to go ahead and take it because it was a good opportunity for him.
Not long afterward, I quit.
From what I’ve heard the place went downhill almost immediately.
The regular guests figured out why I was no longer there, and they stopped coming in.
Decades later,
I owned a fine dining Italian restaurant with my husband, Bella Aquila Restaurant.
Our philosophy was:
✔️ Hire the best people
✔️ Give them everything they need to succeed
✔️ Get out of their way so they can be awesome
This gave them the freedom to own their work and innovate.
We made a point to develop leadership, especially with girls and women.
For example, this “High Desert Margarita” is the signature drink created by a part-time bartender who worked her way up to becoming our General Manager.
Today, she is the General Manager of one of the premier historic hotels in our area.
Looking back at my previous manager who said that as a girl I couldn’t be an inspirational leader, all I can think of is: Revenge is a dish best served cold…or a chilled cocktail on my own restaurant’s patio.
I have room for two new clients.
