At 63, my friend Eva was the oldest American woman to climb Mt Everest! Until a 66 year old American woman summitted Everest five days later.
Friday evening, I attended a presentation she gave about her journey.
Eva’s mission is to climb the Seven Summits, the tallest mountain on each of the seven continents, by her 70th birthday to bring attention to climate change. Last year she summitted Aconcagua in South America and Denali in North America.
Her motto is “Can’t. Must. Did.” On Everest, and even during some previous climbs, she sometimes felt like, “I can’t do this. I MUST do this.” And then, “I did it!”
She described all the ways in which climbing Everest changed her. They’re very life coachy, so let me share a few of my favorites:
· It’s never too late to start. If you never start, then it’s too late.
· Dance with fear. Embrace risk.
· Don’t listen to the naysayers—believe in yourself.
· When you step outside of your comfort zone, you grow.
· Invest in yourself.
· Dream big.
· Give yourself grace.
· It’s about the journey.
· Can’t. Must. Did.
She answered questions about things no one ever talks about, such as “How did you poop up there?” At extreme elevation, bodily functions become logistical challenges.
Her next of the Seven Summits is Kilimanjaro, but her “next Everest” is writing a book about her journey.
She asked us: “What’s your next Everest?”
For me it’s finishing healing my MCL so I can level up my karate training back to full-strength, and then return to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Eva’s motto, “Can’t. Must. Did.” is about more than climbing the highest summits, it’s about life. So I’ll ask you what she asked us, “What’s your next Everest?”
