How can you redirect your doomscrolling into more nourishing activities?
My client used to enjoy arguing with strangers on the internet.
It was a fun intellectual exercise.
But then he said that a few years ago people on the internet became stupider, which made arguing feel like bullying. He would search for good arguments to join in, but this morphed into doomscrolling.
It became a time-suck that left him feeling depleted.
I pointed out that these days, most of those accounts are probably either bots or paid trolls. He’s no longer arguing with genuine human beings.
He looked deflated.
All of his intellect and wit had been wasted on troll bots or farms.
Then he reflected upon his values and developed a Replacement Behavior:
Whenever he felt like doomscrolling, he would instead message a friend he hasn’t heard from in a while.
Brilliant!
This gives him:
🔹Screentime which he truly enjoys
🔹 Dopamine hit of completing a task
🔹 Social connection with real human beings whom he actually cares about
The plan was perfect except for one glitch: RSD.
What if no one wanted to reconnect with him?
He sat with that fear for a moment.
Then he separated the goal from the outcome:
The pattern-interrupt was the win. Any reconnection was a bonus.
After he implemented the plan, he realized he needed one more piece:
Remaining well-informed without scrolling for news.
He chose a few carefully vetted news sources that he trusted,
and used them for the majority of his information gathering.
The result, six months later:
🔸 No more doomscrolling
🔸 Well informed of current events
🔸 Full social life because so many people wanted to reconnect
What would you rather be doing instead of doomscrolling?
