Make My Employees Awesome

A former employee from my husband’s and my former restaurant just quit his job and came to read his letter of resignation to me.

Among the reasons he cited was that he never saw anyone from upper management talking with the lowest paid staff. He said it would be a big job with 200-300 employees, but doable, and important.

Then he pointed at me and said, “Ask me how I know.”

I said, “Yeah, a lot of our former employees have said that we’ve ruined them for bad bosses. They can’t put up with bad leadership anymore.”

“That’s very true,” he said.

It started with my in-laws who were the founders of the restaurant before my husband and I bought it from them.

When they asked team members, “How are you doing today?” They actually wanted to know the answer. They did their best to provide everyone with what they needed.

My husband and I expanded on that, grooming them for leadership.

Our ownership philosophy was, “Hire the best people and give them everything they need to succeed, then get out of their way so they can be awesome.”

At that time I was practicing four different martial art styles, five days per week, including three times on Mondays. Plus I traveled across the country attending self-defense conferences.

The only way I could accomplish all of this was to empower our team so they could run the restaurant when I wasn’t there.

I liked to say, “It’s in my selfish best interest to make my employees awesome.”

Since we closed the restaurant, many of our former team have gone into leadership, others into entrepreneurship.

Indeed, this former employee said he’s going to try solopreneurship. He has plenty of money saved up and lots of talent.
