To The Moon

We’re going back to the moon!

This is the first time humans have gone to the moon within my autobiographical memory, as I was too young at the time of the Apollo missions to really remember them.

What I do remember was the first Space Shuttle landing. I missed the launch because I was on a middle school spring break field trip to France. But for the landing…

I was in the airport in Paris. I watched the landing on a TV at a bar, standing outside because I was too young to go in. All of these people from all over the world were cheering.

It was the first time I felt “proud” to be an American. I had always felt grateful to be an American but not “pride” because I did nothing to achieve my citizenship, I was merely lucky to have been born here. But at that moment I felt pride.

I had a similar feeling watching Artemis II launch on the live stream, seeing the well wishes and cheers from people all over the world.

But whereas the earlier Apollo lunar missions were entirely American endeavors, this time we’re taking the world with us!

10 European countries contributed to the European Service Module, which provides life support, power, and propulsion for Orion.

34 countries contributed ground tracking.

And one of the astronauts, Jeremy Hansen, is Canadian.

Also, 61 countries have signed on to the Artemis Accords, which as NASA describes them are “Principles for a Safe, Peaceful, and Prosperous Future in Space.”

This is what I want for my country and the world, to be united in science for the benefit of humanity—and really all life on Earth.

A principle I share with my friend Rory Miller is you can take on the world if you’re not fighting yourself.

It’s probably also true that the world can take on the universe if we’re not fighting ourselves.
