A good first step for transforming your Hyperfocus to Flow State is igniting your curiosity.
First, a refresher:
Hyperfocus = intense focus
Double-edged sword of feels like a superpower but can also feel like a trap.
Flow State = deep focus
Feels like mastery.
You can’t turn on Flow State like a switch,
but you can create the conditions to help you move into it more easily.
A good place to start is curiosity.
Curiosity itself can spark dopamine—the feel-good brain chemical that helps you focus, stay engaged, and spot new patterns.
🔹 You don’t have to feel motivated.
🔹 You don’t have to feel confident.
🔹 You don’t have to feel ready.
🔸 You just have to feel curious for one moment.
That one moment is enough to start the dopamine drip.
For those of us with ADHD, curiosity is where we live.
And we are pattern-recognition machines.
Each new pattern we spot creates another drip of dopamine —
a little hit of feel-good focus that helps carry us into Flow.
For us, the problem is reining in our distractibility,
which directs our hyperfocus to the wrong things.
This is especially true when we must do a task that’s boring.
I have to do some accounting for my business…
but Facebook keeps showing me wood-turning videos.
The key is to find something interesting within the boring task.
Curiosity is the steering wheel that directs you back.
In my accounting example, a curious thought might be:
“What might this data unlock?”
Here’s the cool thing:
Just looking for something interesting is enough to start the dopamine drip
even before you find a pattern that will keep the Flow going.
Anticipation is enough to spark dopamine.
Curiosity isn’t a feeling, it’s a strategy.
You’re not “tricking” your brain, you’re aligning with it.
This is what it means to Live an Enhanced Life.
What’s your version of the “wood turning videos” battle?
And how do you pivot back to your task?
