Eudaimonia over Living a Life of Flow

April 29, 20262 min read

“I’ve actually lived in Flow State all the time,” my friend told me.

“I didn’t think that was possible,” I said, “Everything I’ve read says, and my own experience is, that it’s a cycle and you can’t stay in Flow State all the time.

“No, you can,” he said, “But there are downsides to it, so eventually I stopped.”

He described how during that time he lived in intuition most of the time. This was during college and for a few years afterward. He said in college he took tests intuitively, and he did very well because his unconscious mind was almost always right, but later he couldn’t remember the information because he never really learned it.

Eventually he decided to quit living like this because he realized he had stopped learning and growing, which he valued more than being in flow state all of the time.

He said, “Everyone tries to live a balanced life, but a balanced object doesn’t move.”

He values moving.

So do I.

Upon him telling me this, I decided to stop using the term “Living a life of Flow” and instead use the more proper Greek term, “Eudaimonia”.

Eudaimonia means “flourishing through virtuous action”, living in alignment with your highest self and purpose while contributing to the greater good.

He said it was the “while contributing to the greater good” that he was missing.

He said, “Living intuitively, I became lazy like a predator. Lions don’t actually do very much, they nap most of the time conserving their energy.”

Eudaimonia includes living in such a high state that you can enter Flow State easily.

But Flow State is best thought of as a cycle:

➡️ Stress

➡️ Release

➡️ Flow State

➡️ Recovery

This cycle is what keeps you growing.

Where in your life are you choosing movement over balance?
